A right wrist injury forced Thiem to retire from today's Mallorca Championships opener while he held a 5-2 lead over Adrian Mannarino.

The second-seeded Thiem seemed to strain his wrist while flicking back a forehand from the baseline at 15-all.

A grimacing Thiem looked in pain, but played through it and held for a 5-2 lead. Thiem took a medical timeout during the ensuring changeover and though he took treatment from the trainer he could not continue play.

The injury comes as Thiem, who was bounced out of his Roland Garros opener in a five-set loss to 68th-ranked Pablo Andujar, was trying to gain grass-court match play ahead of Wimbledon, which begins on Monday.

French left-hander Mannarino will play either sixth-seeded Karen Khachanov or Spanish lefty Feliciano Lopez in the quarterfinals.

Earlier, top-seeded Daniil Medvedev converted four of eight break points conquering Corentin Moutet 6-4, 6-2. Australian Open finalist Medvedev will play Casper Ruud for a semifinal spot.

The fifth-seeded Ruud, who trains on Mallorca at the Rafa Nadal Academy, defeated Tennys Sandgren 6-3, 6-4.

Empowered by his run to his maiden grass-court title in Halle on Sunday, Ugo Humbert slammed 17 aces defeating Miomir Kecmanovic 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-2. It was Humbert's sixth straight grass-court win.

The 25th-ranked Frenchman has played with poise under pressure winning six of his last seven tie breakers. Humbert will play former Wimbledon semifinalist Sam Querrey for a semifinal spot. Querrey cracked 22 aces in a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(3) victory over Roberto Carballes Baena
