Two weeks ago in Dubai, a frustrated Marton Fucsovics told Andrey Rublev: "I hope I don't play you anymore this year.”
Naturally they met at the very next tour stop, with Rublev completing his personal March massacre over the Hungarian 6-2 6-1 in third-round action on Monday.
It was just another day at the office for the World No.8, who improved his tour-leading win record to 18-3 and set a round of 16 clash with Marin Cilic.
“Of course I am really happy,” Rublev said after his 53-minute rout of the Hungarian. “Especially in these conditions, it really helps that you don’t spend much time on court. Today was really humid and really hot.”
Cilic defeated 19-year-old Italian Lorenzo Musetti, 6-3 6-4, while 21-year-old Denis Shapovalov fell to Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, who reached the Miami round of 16 for the first time with a 6-3, 7-6(6) victory over the Canadian.
But the news wasn’t all bad for Canada on Monday in Miami. Milos Raonic toppled France’s Ugo Humbert, 6-4 7-5 to improve to 16-6 lifetime at Miami.
Later today Stefanos Tsitsipas, seeded second, will face Kei Nishikori, while 20-year-old American Sebastian Korda will face rising Russian Aslan Karatsev.
