Simona Halep’s clay-court season took a sudden detour on Wednesday in Rome s the Romanian star, a perennial threat to win Roland-Garros, suffered a tear in her right calf that could put her Paris hopes in jeopardy.

Halep was leading Angelique Kerber by a set and level at 3-3 when the injury happened, and she could barely walk to her chair before she met with an on-court physician and elected to pull the plug on the match (see full highlights from 7:30 in the video above).

An ultrasound later revealed that Halep had torn a muscle in her left calf.

“Unfortunately an ultrasound has revealed that I have a tear in my left calf,” she said on social media. “I will get an MRI tomorrow to understand the injury in more detail, but at the moment we are unsure of recovery time. I’m so disappointed to end my tournament in Rome like this but I will do everything I can to take care of the injury and be back as soon as possible.”

If there is one blessing, it is the fact that Roland-Garros has moved back a week in the calendar and Halep will have about 17 days to recover before main draw begins in Paris.

Kerber, who will move on to play Jelena Ostapenka after the 1-6, 3-3 RET victory, sends her thoughts to Halep.

“I was feeling so bad with her, because this is not the way I would like to finish, yeah, a tough match against also a friend on the other side,” she said. “I was trying to helping her as much as I can, but yeah, I hope that she will get very soon back and it's not too bad.”
