The 87th-ranked Italian scored her third upset of a seeded foe in four matches this week. Paolini toppled sixth-seeded Dayana Yastremska in her opener before beating fourth-seeded Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
Paolini broke to start the second set with a 2-0 lead before Putintseva answered with a three-game surge. Paolini lifted her level racing through seven straight games to seize the second set and go up 3-0 in the third.
