Tatjana Maria

Tatjana Maria outlasted Laura Pigossi to notch an emotional title at Bogota.

Germany’s Tatjana Maria capped a magnificent week by becoming the first WTA player ranked outside the Top-200 to claim a title on tour since 2019, the 34-year-old edging Brazil’s Laura Pigossi, a fellow qualifier, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in two hours and 30 minutes.

The victory marks Maria’s second career title, and first since 2018.

Maria, a mother of two, had both daughters and her husband (who is also her coach) with her courtside after the final as she relished in her emotional victory. Maria is the first mother of two to lift a WTA trophy this century, per the WTA. She gave birth to her second child, Cecilia in April of 2021.

Maria won 42 of 54 first-serve points and saved three of five break points. She fought off both break points she faced in the final set, as Pigossi struggled against fatigue. The German won six of the final seven games, finishing with 19 winners and 13 unforced errors, against 21 winners and 30 unforced for Pigossi.

Maria is the tour’s lowest-ranked champion since 2018, when Margarita Gasparyan won Tashkent.
