Carlos Alcaraz notched his 40th win of 2022 to reach the last eight at Umag.

Defending champ Carlos Alcaraz fought past 31-year-old lucky loser Norbert Gombos, 6-2, 6-3, to take his place in the quarterfinals at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open in Umag.

The Spaniard improves to 40-6 on the season, and 25-3 on clay, and sets a quarterfinal clash with Facundo Bagnis of Argentina.

The top seed improves to 6-0 in Umag with his victory. He needed one hour and 37 minutes to finish off the World No.117, converting his sixth match point to remain undefeated against players outside the top-100 in 2022.

Only two seeds remain in the draw at Umag – Alcaraz and second-seeded Jannik Sinner, who was in attendance on Thursday, watching Alcaraz compete.

A total of four Italians have reached the quarterfinals – three of whom have come from qualifying (Cecchinato, Agemenone, Zeppieri) – as well as three Spaniards.
