A few years ago it would have been nearly impossible to imagine a recently turned 19-year-old going all the way at Roland-Garros. But in the year of Carlos Alcaraz, it seems more and more possible with each passing day.

Tennis Express

Take Sunday for instance, when the Spaniard rumbled past Russia’s Karen Khachanov, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 to book his first quarterfinal in Paris. The Spaniard cranked 37 winners to just 19 for Khachanov, and broke serve five times on 12 opportunities, making Court Phillipe-Chatrier look like his own personal playground as he improved to 32-3 on the season and set up a last eight clash with Germany’s Alexander Zverev.

Zverev owns the 2-1 head-to-head record over Alcaraz but the Spaniard thrashed the German thoroughly in the Madrid final a few weeks ago, 6-3, 6-1 – the lopsided victory was yet another sign that Alcaraz has passed most of the Next Gen by already.

“He's playing amazing,” Zverev said at the time. “There's absolutely no doubt about it. He's playing amazing.”

The German took out Spain’s Bernable Zapata Miralles in straight sets on Day 8.

Alcaraz, who saved a match point in his second-round match against Albert Ramos-Vinolas, has been dominant in his last two rounds.

By winning on Sunday, he became the youngest man to reach two Grand Slam quarterfinals since Andrei Medvedev at 1993 Roland Garros and US Open.

Khachanov drops to 17-6 lifetime at Roland-Garros, and 0-1 against Alcaraz.

The Russian was only able to win 58 percent of his first-serve points and struggled to hold serve throughout the night.
