Alejandro Falla Grounded In the USA
By Lauren Lynch
(July 19, 2010) Alejandro Falla was four points from completing the most shocking Wimbledon upset in Open Era history when the 65th-ranked Falla served for the match against Roger Federer at 5-4 in the fourth set of last month's first-round Wimbledon match.
Falla was flying high until Federer fought back for a five-set victory.
The match remains a career highlight for Falla, who was once grounded in the USA.
"I've missed a plane a couple of times. I was with [Colombian Davis Cup teammate] Santiago Giraldo, and we were on a connection here in America heading to Indianapolis," Falla told Vanity Fair's Jonathan Topaz in a recent interview. "We were watching movies on the computer, just waiting for the plane, and once we realized a long time just passed [laughing], so we missed the flight. We waited for five hours to catch the next flight."
Travel costs for a top 100 player can take a toll. Falla has responded by minimizing his baggage.
"Travel luggage is just one big bag for the clothing and everything, and one bag for the rackets. So, just two bags," Falla told Vanity Fair.
