(October 6, 2011) Andy Roddick took to twitter to set the record straight about his most recent controversy where he supposedly walked out of a press conference at the China Open saying that the recorded accounts of the events were false.
The issue arose when Roddick, after a loss to Kevin Anderson, was asked by a reporter about the point when he would consider retiring and the feisty American declared that the reporter should retire. A video circulated around the event that made it appear that directly after Roddick, who is privy to controversial behavior, answered the question he got up and left the pressroom.
About this whole "walked out of a press conference" thing. Moderator announced that it was last question before my retirement response,” the World No. 15 rehashed on twitter.
“Definitely did not get up in the middle and 'walk out of interview' contrary to headline on cnnsi.com. Answered last question and left.”
The video did not show the moderator’s comment and neither did the transcripts so it was difficult for journalists not at the event itself to tell. Soon the headline was reported virally across several channels and people began to bash/support the player’s actions.
Shortly afterward, the company, CNNSI.com, their headline to "Roddick loses in China | Tells reporter to retire."
The former No. 1 was satisfied with the change and later tweeted out, “Cnnsi.com changed their headline :)”
