(September 26, 2011) There is a lot of talk about a player’s union forming fronted by Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray. The last American man to win a major, Andy Roddick, supports the idea of players banding together to deal with sports related issues and potentially leading the group.
The thought of making a union was highlighted by the weather problems at the 2011 US Open that suspended play and forced matches to be played on the last few days utilizing the smaller courts at the same time.
“We’re not sure what we’d do. Whether it means a stoppage for a major tournament, that’s something we’ve got to talk about,” Andy Roddick told the Associated Press. “If we do that, I’m sure we’ll all get together and play somewhere for a charity of some sort or to show people that it’s more about a voice and not about dollars so much.”
The former US Open champion did not like that the players did not have a say in their safety in playing at the Grand Slam event.
He said “We were at the Open and we didn’t have a voice to not go on, and that kind of struck us as odd considering that we’re the ones out there playing and risking and the whole deal.”
Some former players, such as Martina Navratilova, support the initiative, while Michael Stich had a different opinion. Roddick assured that nothing is going to happen soon.
“I think if we are going to do something, it’s going to be thoroughly thought out and it’s not going to happen tomorrow," he said.
It has been suggested that the issue and plans will come into fruition at the Shanghai Masters, where the players are required to play.
