Andy Roddick Walks Out Of Press Conference

By James Waterson

(October 3, 2011)
Andy Roddick has always been known for having a sharp wit and a lack of tolerance for silly questions from journalists, and Monday was no exception.

After losing to Kevin Anderson in the first round of the China Open, a reporter asked Roddick what rank the American would have to fall to before he would consider retiring.

Roddick’s reaction was expected. He rolled his eyes, told the reporter that he should retire, and then walked out of the room.

The American has been testy with reporters recently. At the US Open, he
had a testy encounter with Chris Fowler of ESPN, and his verbal sparring continued in his press conference afterword.

Still, the question was ridiculous considering he made the quarterfinals of the US Open and the finals of the Winston & Salem Open the week before.

And it’s not as if Roddick lost to a 900th-ranked wildcard. Anderson has shown he can beat the top guys, as he dominated Andy Murray in the second round of the Rogers Cup.

But, Roddick is supposed to act like a professional and this definitely wasn’t up to that standard.

What an insulting question! Roddick is right, the reporter should retire. Darn, Roddick's still in the top 20!

What a silly question he was
asked. I enjoy watching Andy
play. I wish him the best of
luck. There are not many players I enjoy watching but
Andy is one I don't turn off.

While I am a Federer fan, I have to say that Andy is also a really good player who has had the misfortune of coming up just as Fed, Rafa and Novak came up - else he would have definitely won a few grand slams. On a good day, he is right near the top. There is so much to learn from his serve too. He still has several years to go before anybody should even ask about his retirement.

By the way, even though Fed hasn't won a slam recently, there should be no question about his retirement too - he plays with such ease - awesome!

I'm so tired of everyone giving Andy Roddick a pass on his bad behavior. True that a lot of questions asked in these press conferences are stupid, but he's not the only one who's ever been asked a stupid question. No one else walks out. Why does he think he's better than they are? And I haven't even mentioned his behavior on court. Serena recently got fined for hers. Has Andy every gotten fined? I would hope so.

I think Andy had every right to say what he did and to walk out. He handled it very professionally. Andy is a GREAT player...I enjoy watching him.

Andy's Andy and a great American tennis player. He's great to watch and cheer for. I've never cheered for any reporters and definitely won't start now. They typically ask questions to get "under the skin" of the athletes so they shouldn't be surprised when they do.

Players try so hard to stay in a positive frame of mind. Stupid, disrespectful questions make it difficult. He didn't lose his cool, but he doesn't need that negativity!

I love that the reporter had the ba**s to ask Roddick that question. Have always hated roddicks on court behavior and smart a** comments during the press conferences. He's a modern day Johnny Mac. No room for that in tennis. If I met him , I would tell him to retire. He made us open quarters because most of the Americans were given easy draws. Set up cough cough!

Sometimes I wonder whether these die-hard Roddick fans even watch tennis. Roddick is not a great guy, and he's an average athlete who's gotten where he has mostly through drive, not talent.
