(March 4, 2011) Team USA starts strong against Chile for the first rubber in Santiago, Chile to solidify 1-0. Andy Roddick beat down grinder Nicolas Massu 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Roddick had 25 to Massu's 9 total winners but didn't serve a single ace. John Isner is up next to play the next singles match against Paul Capdeville.

Meanwhile, top players are dropping out of the Davis Cup teams like flies. First, Novak Djokovic dropped out to prepare for the BNP Paribas Open but the Serbian team remains confident.  World no. 29 Viktor Troicki  had a long match against and defeated World no. 629 Rohan Bopanna 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 3-6, 6-3. India's team lost thier strong doubles assetts Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi. They were replaced by World no. 285 Karan Rastogi and World no. 504 Yuki Bhambri, however Somdev Devvarman and Bopanna will play the doubles matches. Paes suffered a wrist injury that is currently in a cast and may keep him out of Indian Wells' tournament. Bhupathi is suffering for an old injury of the back.

Spain's team lost David Ferrer due to an inflamed nerve of the shoulder. Fernando Verdasco took his place to play Xavier Malisse, who has won 12 of 22 Davis Cup matches, in which the World no. 9 conquered 6-4, 6-3, 6-1. Spain is now 2-0 to Belgium after Rafael Nadal won 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 against Ruben Bemelmans. Spain has advantage after defeating Belgium 5-0 in 2003.
