(October 26, 2011) For the first face-off of the day, World No. 4 Victoria Azarenka dominated World No. 7 Samantha Stosur, who defeated Maria Sharapova yesterday in two sets at the WTA Championships in Istanbul.

For her first win at the season-end finals. Azarenka took 77 minutes to oust the Australian 6-2, 6-2 to add a win for the white group and marks her 53rd win of the season. The Belarusian star, despite no major titles, has a 5-0 winning lead over the recent US Open champion.

In the first set, Azarenka was quick to gain a double break at 4-1 and attempted six more with dominating rallies. Stosur showed her frustration and tried to amp herself up with encouragement but it was not enough.

The concluding set was followed by another double break at 4-1with a drop-shot winner. Stosur tried to fight off the end at 5-2 but she hit wide with a forehand to give Azarenka her third match point and ended it with a fourth match point.

Stosur only managed to win 11 total points off Azarenka’s serve in the entire match; six of the 11 were won in the last game that went into deuce and her only break attempt. Azarenka ended up winning 77 percent of her total-service points and only gave two points away on double faults.

Unfortunately for the Australian, she seemed to become a victim to scheduling- after she played the last match of the night on Tuesday and the first match of the morning today against a player who had not been on court yet. She played with nerves and appeared tired but Azarenka was performing at the top of her game.

The next match of the day will be played against Li Na and Sharapova.
