Victoria Azarenka ended her difficult 2014 season by announcing her withdrawal from this week's Wuhan Open in China along with all other scheduled events at the end of the year.

Azarenka, who has dealt with an ongoing foot injury, cited a need to rest and recover.

“Unfortunately I will not be competing in any tournaments for the remainder of the season. It has been a very tough year for me. I have been trying my best to improve day in and day out by pushing and pushing…but that does not appear to be the best approach for me right now."

Azarenka, now ranked No. 25, reached the US Open quarterfinals a few weeks ago. Yet the two-time Australian Open champion is still not full healed from a foot injury that started affecting her at the start of the season.

"I will use this time to work on making a full recovery and take care of my body to compete at my best next season. I always believe that everything happens for a reason and everything doesn't happen the way you'd want it to but it is up to you to make the best out of everything that does…and that is exactly what I am going to do."

The sad part about making this decision is not being able to play in these amazing tournaments that I really enjoy playing in every year and performing in front of all of you," Azarenka added.

The Wuhan Open was scheduled to feature all top 20 WTA players during the inaugural event. China's Li Na withdrew earlier after announcing her retirement at age 32.

In opening round action, France's Caroline Garcia upset Venus Williams in three sets. Despite Williams holding a 5-2 lead in the final set, Garcia came back to win 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(6).
