Azarenka and Sharapova Withdraw Due to Health Issues

By Erik Gudris

(August 10, 2012) -- Top seed Victoria Azarenka was forced to withdraw today from the Rogers Cup in Montreal due to a knee injury that prevented her from finishing her second round match against Tamira Paszek that was tied at 3-all.

"I had no time to recover and my body is feeling it," Azarenka told press in Montreal. "I just felt my knee was not in good shape. Hopefully it is nothing serious."

Later in the afternoon, Maria Sharapova announced on her website that she was withdrawing from the Western & Southern Open taking place next week in Cincinnati due to a stomach virus that she's been suffering from since the Olympics; this same ailment forced her out of this week's Montreal event. Both Azarenka and Sharapova are scheduled to next compete at the U.S. Open later this month.
