Bartoli Strikes 10 Double-Faults, Moves To New Haven Quarters

(August 24, 2011) Up for the running for bonus-prize money at the US Open, fourth-seeded Marion Bartoli defeated Czech Klara Zakopalova with 102 total points out of 190 in two hours, 18 minutes into New Haven's quarterfinals.

Despite 10 double faults, she pushed the World No. 44 for 21 breaks of serve but only converted six. Zakopalova played an excellent defensive games by saving 15 of her serves from the French player's attack while taking four breaks for herself out of 10 attempts.

The women’s second and third place finishers in this year’s bonus challenge for the Olympus US Open Series have yet to be chosen but the World No. 9 joins Agnieszka Radwanksa and Maria Sharapova to compete for it.

The next winner of the day was Elena Vesnina, who defeated last week's finalist Jelena Jankovic yesterday. Spanish Anabel Medina Garrigues stopped the Russian on Wednesday 6-2, 7-6(5) in two hours, 13 minutes.

Ranked 32 in the World, the top-ranked women in Spain avoided faults and played  fairly consistent. She won 55 percent of her total service points and 51 percent of her total return points.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is one step ahead in the rankings above Roberta Vinci and was able outplay the Italian 6-2, 6-4. She will face second seed Li Na.
