(November 11, 2011) Making it to his first semifinal since he won the tournament in 2005, No.5 seed Tomas Berdych upset third-seeded Andy Murray 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in a battle of a match that lasted for three hours and 12 minutes.

It was his third win over the World No. 3, who only has one win in their head-to-head series.

The Czech, who qualified for the year-end finals yesterday, only won three more total points (122 of 241) than the Scot, who has a been on an 18-match winning streak since the US Open if you count the Davis Cup and do not count his withdrawal from Basel last week. Murray was looking to secure the year-end No. 3 spot but he has to hope that Roger Federer falls in Paris and in London.

Berdych was able to win 46 points on his opponent’s serve with two breaks and saved 15 of 17 attempts to steal his serve. When Murray started to lose the second set in the tiebreaker he started to hit several errors and appeared tired.

This marks Berdych’s 51st win of the year. He is looking to gain his second title in 2011 but first he will have to surpass Roger Federer or Juan Monaco.

If he faces Federer, he has a losing head-to-head record at four wins to nine by the Swiss, however, he won their only encounter in 2011 in Cincinnati. He will likely to be bidding to face Juan Monaco in the semifinals whom he has a 6-0 record against.
