Czechs Take Lead with Doubles Win in Davis Cup

By Erik Gudris

(September 15th, 2012) Despite being the away team in Buenos Aires, the Czech Republic need just one more win to enter the Davis Cup finals after they won the doubles rubber against Argentina earlier today.

With the pairing of Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek, the Czechs squared off against Carlos Berlocq and Eduardo Schwank and had little trouble closing out a convincing 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 win in just over two hours and thirty minutes of play.

Despite the Argentines serving more aces and nearly equaling the Czech's team 67% first serve percentage for the match, it was the 41 unforced errors from Berlocq and Schawnk that proved their undoing as the Czechs now hold a 2-1 lead heading into tomorrow's reverse singles rubbers. Berdych and Stepanek are now 11-1 lifetime as a doubles team.

Berdych is set to face Juan Martin Del Potro in a must win match for the Argentines in the first singles rubber tomorrow while Stepanek will meet Juan Monaco if needed in the final match of the tie.
