Davis Cup Roundup: Federer and Wawrinka lose, Brazil into World Group

Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka were defeated by Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer on Saturday, staying alive in the Davis Cup tie this weekend.

(September 15, 2012) -- Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka were defeated by Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer on Saturday, as the Dutch team broke serve with Roger Federer serving on three occasions to notch a 6-4, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 victory to stay alive in Amsterdam.

Federer was broken in the 9th game of the first set, and Rojer served the set out in the next game to give the Dutch the lead.

In the second set, Wawrinka and Federer were broken in succession as the Dutch raced out to a 4-0 lead.

The Swiss rebounded to take the third set, but the Dutch team managed to break Federer's serve with the 17-time Grand Slam serving at 3-all in the fourth set.

With Wawrinka serving at 3-5, the Dutch broke again to close the victory in two hours and twenty-six minutes.

The Swiss, who led 2-0 after Friday, still feel confident as Roger Federer plans to take the court against Robin Haase in the reverse singles on Sunday.

"Credit to Stan for that difficult win on [a four-set win over Haase on Friday]. It means we are still up 2-1 and we're full of confidence for tomorrow."

Federer and Haase have never met on the ATP Tour.

Notes, Numbers: Federer's Davis Cup doubles record dropped to 11-8 with the loss...  Brazil returned to the World Group for the first time in nine years when Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares capped off a 3-0 sweep of Russia with a win over Alex Bogomolov Jr. and Teymuraz Gabashvili on Saturday... Belgium also advanced, sweeping the first two day's against Sweden 3-0...Australia leads Germany 2-1, Israel leads Japan 2-1, Canada leads South Africa 2-1, Kazakhstan leads Uzbekistan 2-1 and Italy leads Chile 2-1 in the other ties.
