Juan Martin Del Potro confirmed on his Facebook account that he will undergo surgery for his left wrist Monday.

"I want to tell you that after a period of medical treatment, in which we tried to be competitive on a tennis court, and following new examinations done today, my doctor Richard Berger decided that I should have surgery to fix the problem on my left wrist. It will be Monday, March 24," Del Potro said in a written statement.

The announcement comes just days after Del Potro withdrew from this week's Sony Open in Miami and from the earlier event in Indian Wells. His last match was in Dubai, where Del Potro retired to Somdev Devvarman in the second round.

The issue initially began two years ago in Cincinnati and flared up at subsequent events. Del Potro first experienced severe pain in his left wrist during his first round match against Rhyne Williams at the Australian Open back in January. The Argentine star flew to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., later that month to have the problem assessed by Dr.  Berger, who operated on Del Potro's right wrist back in 2010.

"Obviously, it's not the easiest choice or the happiest moment of my career. I experienced a similar situation and I know how hard it is to be out of the tour, the desire to return, the endless weeks of recovery and how difficult it is to start fighting for the top spots in the rankings again," Del Potro said.

With Del Potro needing to recover, no date is set for his return to the tour this season.
