(November 4, 2011) On Friday at the Valencia Open 500 quarterfinals, fourth seed Juan Martin Del Potro ousted the World No. 116 Sam Querrey of the USA, 6-2, 7-5, in 78 minutes for his 48th win of the season. This is his seventh semifinal this year since he made his comeback from a wrist injury and surgery that kept him out for the majority of 2010.

He will gain many points from his success in Valencia because he has never played the tournament before and has no points to defend. He could edge Janko Tipsarevic, Nicolas Almagro, Mardy Fish, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for the remaining spots at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.

The World No. 14 served seven aces and only relinquished eight of 48 points on his serve to Querrey (two of which were double faults). He won 87 percent of points on his first serve and 60 percent of the total points.

Last year’s runner up Marcel Granollers advanced to the semifinals when he upset third-seeded Gael Monfils, 7-6(12), 3-6, 6-4 in two hours and 26 minutes.

The Frenchman has never made it past the quarterfinals at the indoor-hard-court event and moves on to the Paris Masters in hopes to make it past the finals to potentially qualify for the year-end finals. This was his 15th loss of 38 wins.

This marks the 34th-ranked Spaniard’s second semifinal of the season. The World No. 10 has an erratic service game with 10 aces and eight double faults while Granollers won 66 percent of total service points and actually won two points less than the loser of the match.

Both broke each other four times but Granollers took one extra attempt and converted five set points the 65-minute first. This was his 25th win of 24 losses in 2011 and first top-10 win of the year.

He will meet the Argentine, who he has never played before, next and potentially face David Ferrer again in the finals.
