(January 24, 2012) If day 9 was any indication of how Day 10 would play out, we can be assured of talented tennis.
A few experienced Grand Slam veterans will take the court, as well as a guy who has never been in this position before.
Matchups include Novak Djokovic vs. David Ferrer and Andy Murray vs. Kei Nishikori. Let’s take a look at how the players match up.
Novak Djokovic [1] vs. David Ferrer [5]
The number one player in the world has his work cut out for him as he faces the hard hitting Spaniard David Ferrer in the marquee matchup of the day. Djokovic holds a career 6-5 winning record, with Ferrer winning their latest matchup at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals 6-3, 6-1.
The Spaniard has not fared well against the Serb on the hard courts, going 1-4 in their only meetings. Djokovic is looking to repeat as last year’s champion while Ferrer will look to match his success of reaching the semifinals a year ago.
Andy Murray [4] vs. Kei Nishikori [24]
Scotland’s number one player will look to advance to the semifinals of the Australian Open for a third straight year. Murray reached the finals the past two years, but hasn’t fared well in either instance.
He will be looking to break through again when he meets 24th seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan. Murray issued Nishikori a drubbing in their only career match, 6-3, 6-0 in Shanghai last year. Murray dominated and Nishikori admitted to being overwhelmed.
Don’t count the Japanese star out yet though, he has already taken down the hard-hitting Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and will be looking to improve his best ever performance at a Grand Slam.
In what will be an exciting day at the Aussie Open, I’ll look for Djokovic and Murray to move and face each other in the semifinals.
