Djokovic Prevails after Tussle with Hewitt, Federer Eases Past Istomin

By Chris Oddo

Sara Errani French Open (August, 1 2012)—Former Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt came to Centre Court with an upset on his mind, but another former Wimbledon champion had other ideas.

Novak Djokovic overcame a one-set deficit and some tense moments in the second set to win going away, 4-5, 7-5, 6-1.

"He started off really well," said Djokovic. "I don't think that I've done anything wrong throughout the whole match. He was striking the ball really well."

Hewitt won 15 of 15 first serve points in the first set and did not face a break point against Djokovic. The 31-year-old broke in the ninth game and served out the first set to the delight of his rowdy supporters.

"The ball bounces lower--as I said after the previous match--than it did in Wimbledon. I think it's suitable to his style of game," said Djokovic.

In a hard-fought second set, Djokovic hit 9 of his 16 aces to slow the Hewitt return game down, but the feisty Australian, decked out in bright yellow and green, rallied to get the set back on serve by converting his only break point of the set.

Faced with a challenge, Djokovic stiffened his resolve, breaking Hewitt a second time to clinch the set.

In the third, Hewitt's game started to wear down a bit, while Djokovic looked more and more invincible. Serving perhaps as good as he ever has and stretching to hit improbably good backhand counterpunches, Djokovic made it look easy as he slammed the door shut on Hewitt.

The Serb will advance to face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals.

Federer Downs Istomin to Reach Quarterfinals

Roger Federer
reached the quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Denis Istomin in the first match of the day on Court 1. After jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first set, Istomin rallied to break and level things at three.

After a rain delay with the pair tied at 5-5, Istomin had three chances to break the 7-time Wimbledon champion, but some clutch serving by Federer enabled him to secure the hold. Federer would then go on to break in the 12th game to take the set.

The World No. 1 Swiss, who hit 23 winners and 24 unforced errors on the afternoon, jumped out to another 3-0 lead in the second set, and this time Istomin didn't have the means to make it close.

By this time, Federer's serve was looking typically lethal on the fast-playing grass, which made the challenge even more difficult for Istomin. Federer won 20 of 24 points on serve and did not face a break point in the set as he finished off the World No. 35 in one hour and twenty-one minutes.
