Novak Djokovic began his preparation for the 2012 season with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win against 16th-ranked Gael Monfils at the World Tennis Championship exhibition in Abu Dhabi Thursday.

Djokovic is coming off of one of the seasons in Open Era history. He won three Grand Slam titles – the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open – and a record five Masters Series titles. He also had a 70-6 record and he supplanted
Rafael Nadal as the World No. 1.

With the win, the 24-year-old Serb will face
Roger Federer in the semifinal.

Earlier in the day, World No. 5
David Ferrer defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2. Ferrer will play Nadal, last year’s champion, next.

The World Tennis Championship is a six-man tournament with a winner-take-all prize of $250,000.
