Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova Win 'Best Athlete' Awards at 2012 ESPYs
(July 12, 2012) -- Novak Djokovic  and Maria Sharapova added yet another award to their trophy cases as each was selected as the best tennis players of the year at last night's ESPY awards in Los Angeles.

Djokovic, who won Best Male Tennis Player, was up for two awards including Best Male Athlete based on the strength of his standout 2011 season that saw him claim three Major titles and finish the year at No. 1.

Sharapova, who attended the event wearing a standout dress, was up for three awards including Best Female Athlete and Best Comeback. Sharapova won the Best Female Tennis Player award based on an impressive twelve months that saw her complete a career Grand Slam by winning the French Open earlier this summer along with reclaiming the No. 1 ranking.

The Arthur Ashe Courage Award was given to Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summit for her personal fight against Alzheimer's disease.

Started in 1993 the ESPY Awards, sponsored by ESPN, have recognized the best athletes and sports performances in the world.
