David Ferrer and Andy Murray each took different paths but both find themselves in the second round of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco.

The top seed Ferrer, a former winner of the event when it was held on clay, had no trouble against Mikhail Kukushkin. In less than 90 minutes, Ferrer secured a 6-2, 6-3 win.

With that victory, Ferrer posted his 250th career win on hard courts. Next for the current World No. 4 is fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.

No. 2 seed Murray found himself taking on the recently in-form Pablo Andujar. After holding match points last week versus Rafael Nadal in Rio, Andujar resumed his fine play against Murray early in the late night contest.

Andujar raced out to a 5-0 lead in the opening set. Murray recovered to win a few games, but it wasn't enough to stop Andujar from taking the set 6-3. Though Andujar held an early break in the second set, Murray finally got his game in gear.

Taking the next six games, Murray took the second set and eventually earned a break midway through the final set. Soon, a relieved Murray celebrated the 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win.

Earlier in the day, Ivo Karlovic defeated John Isner 7-6(4), 7-6(5) in their fifth career meeting.

With those tiebreaks, they have now tied an earlier ATP record for the most consecutive tiebreaks played against each other in separate matches with eight in total stretching back to Memphis 2010. Ivan Ljubicic and Marat Safin did it before.

In the women's event, top seed Dominika Cibulkova won her first match since reaching the Australian Open finals. Cibulkova beat Urszula Radwanska 6-3, 6-4.
