(May 9, 2011) On Monday, eleventh seed Svetlana Kuznetsova crashed to World No. 48 Greta Arn of Hungary losing 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(9) at the Italian Open's first in Rome. 2009 Roland Garros champion and owner of thirteen titles, Kuznetsova, has also fallen in the first round of a Premier in Madrid, Indian Wells, and Doha.

Top seeds, Marion Bartoli and Ana Ivanovic, made it to the second round. Nineth seed Bartoli defeated qualifier Arantxa Parra Santonja in two sets 6-2, 6-3 despite five double faults. Bartoli will face qualifier Anabel Medina Garrigues, who improved her losing record to Patty Schnyder to 2-4 with a 6-3, 6-2 win with a strong first serve percentage. Medina Garrigues was not the only qualifier to win after World No. 69 Polona Hercog ousted World No. 29 Alexandra Dulgheru 6-1, 7-5.

Thirteenth seed Ivanovic got through the first round when opponent Nadia Petrova retired at 6-0, 3-0. Ivanovic was playing at a good level because despite Petrova clearly not playing at her best, Ivanovic was able to save 100% of break points and hit seven aces. She will face Yanina Wickmayer, who defeated Angelique Kerber 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, next.

Daniela Hantuchova ended the day with a win over Tsvetana Pironkova 6-4, 6-2, joining Vera Dushevina, Alisa Kleybanova, Ekaterina Makarova, Elena Vesnina, Jarmila Gajdosova, Lourdes Dominguez Line, and Iveta Benesova in her victory.
