Goerges, Kuznetsova & Jankovic Win; Martinez Sanchez Upsets Peer At French 1st Round

(May 22, 2011) 2009 Roland Garros Champion and 13th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova made a first round sweep of Magdalena Rybarikova 6-2, 6-3. Her first serve was effective at 80%.
Former World No. 1 and 10th seed Jelena Jankovic beat Alona Bondarenko in two quick sets 6-3, 6-1 in 63 minutes winning 62 of of 102 total points. She has made it to the semifinals of the French Open three times and started off strong.
Jankovic will face Vera Dushevina, the only player to go into three sets yet today 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 against Jelena Dokic, next.
17th seed and up-and-comer Julia Goerges won her first round match against Mathilde Johansson of France. She has earned great success so far in 2011 and it is very likely that she will surpass her second round record at Roland Garros.
Goerges will meet Lucie Safarova , who won in strait sets 6-1, 6-1, against Kirsten Flipkens, in the second round.
Not all the top seeds had success. 19th seed Shahar Peer was the first seed was upset by Spaniard Maria Jose Medina Garrigues in two sets 7-6(4), 6-1. Peer hit 36 unforced errors and failed to convert 57% of break point opportunities. Medina Garrigues will meet Rebecca Marino of Canada next.
Polona Hercog tasted success against Frenchwoman Olivia Sanchez 6-0, 6-1.
