Azarenka Responds to Timeout Backlash

World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka appeared on Australian T.V. to discuss her controversial time out during her women's semi versus Sloane Stephens at the Australian Open.

(January 25, 2013) -- World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka gave her first television interview since her Australian Open semifinal where she took a now controversial time out that many feel helped win the match against her opponent Sloane Stephens.

Speaking to Australia's Channel 7, Azarenka said that she was advised to leave the court by the tournament's doctors so they could better assess a breathing issue Azarenka was suffering with late in the second set.

Azarenka won the match 6-1, 6-4, but her use of the medical time out has earned her harsh criticism worldwide from many who feel that it was pure gamesmanship and not a legitimate use of the on-court treatment.

The women's final is set for tonight with Azarenka taking on No. 6 seed Li Na of China. Azarenka must win the title outright to keep her No. 1 ranking. A loss would propel Serena Williams into the top spot.
