Isner, Roddick Notch Big Olympic Wins

By Chris Oddo

Sara Errani French Open (July 30, 2012) — One month ago John Isner was a picture of dejection after losing his first-round match at Wimbledon in five sets to Alejandro Falla of Colombia.

Today, after a 7-6(1), 6-2 second-round Olympic victory over Tunisian qualifier Malek Jaziri, Isner’s feeling a lot better. “A little home cooking always does me well,” said Isner of his post-Wimbledon title at Newport and his semifinal run at Atlanta, which have helped the bomb-serving American get his swagger back of late.

Isner was made to work against the World No. 70, but after racing through the first set tiebreaker, the pressure seemed to lift off his shoulders. “Fortunately for me I was able to pull it out in the tiebreaker, and from that point on I started swinging out on the ball. I was very happy with how I played in the second set,” he said.

Isner will face the winner either Janko Tipsarevic or Philipp Petzschner in the round of 16.

Andy Roddick also advanced for the Americans, defeating 23-year-old Martin Klizan of Slovakian 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the second round.

Roddick did not face a break point on the day, winning 38 of 42 points on his first serve.

The 29-year-old World No. 22 will face second-seeded Novak Djokovic in the second round.

Federer Keeps Benneteau at Bay to Reach Third Round

Compared to his come-from-behind five-set victory in the third round of Wimbledon against Julien Benneteau, today’s 6-2, 6-2 drubbing was a walk in the park.

Federer, who is trying to become the first player to own all four Grand Slams and Olympic gold in both singles and doubles, hit 24 winners against 7 errors on Centre Court today, and he did not face a break point.

Federer will face Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in the third round. Istomin outlasted Gilles Muller of Luxembourg, 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 7-5 in two hours and thirty-seven minutes today.
