(November 11, 2011) For the last quarterfinal match on Friday in Paris, American John Isner took his first win over fourth-seeded David Ferrer, who has beaten him in their past three meetings, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 that lasted only 106 minutes for his 36th win of the year.
The 6’9 American had been on a losing streak after the US Open until Paris, as he struggled to get past the first rounds of tournaments this year but had improved for the US Open series.
Known for his large serve, he hit 12 aces and won 59 of 87 of his total service points to counteract the Spaniard’s well-known return game. He broke Ferrer twice while saving four of five attempts on his serve for the World No. 5’s 17th loss this year.
The World No. 25 faces the sixth seed and crowd-favorite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who got a walkover from Novak Djokovic, in the BNP Paribas Masters semifinals. Suprisingly, the two have only met once where the American dominated in three sets in Washington in 2009.
Isner won two of three titles this year in Winston-Salem’s outdoor hard court and Newport’s grass. He will be going for his first indoor-hard court title. He has 18 wins to 15 losses on the surface.
