Jacksonville to Host US Davis Cup Tie vs. Brazil

By Chris Oddo

(October 16, 2012) – The USTA announced today that the 13,000 seat Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena has been selected as the site of the US team’s upcoming first-round Davis Cup tie against Brazil.

The tie, to be contested on Feb 1, 2 and 3, will be only the third home Davis Cup tie for the Americans since Florida native Jim Courier was named to the captaincy in 2010.

Courier and crew reached the semifinals of the international event in 2012, posting road victories over heavily favored teams from Switzerland and France before bowing out to the Spanish team.

The matchup with Brazil will be just the third home tie since 2009 -- in that time the Americans have played seven road ties, all on clay.

The Americans lead the overall series with Brazil 3-1.

“We were very happy to draw a home match,” said Courier. “This could be a great opportunity for players like John (Isner), Sam (Querrey) and Ryan (Harrison) to experience a home-court advantage for the first time in their Davis Cup careers.”

If the US wins, they will face the winner of the Serbia-Belgium tie in the quarterfinals during April of 2013.
