James Blake Notches First-Round Win In Los Angeles

(July 26, 2011) America's James Blake played well before the home-country crowd Tuesday night at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles, defeating Germany's Michael Berrer in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Blake need just 61 minutes to take the victory, hitting 76 percent of his first serves for winners and notching 17 of 32 first return points as well.

Blake has had good success lately at Los Angeles, reaching the quarterfinals a year ago and the finals in 2009.

Earlier in the day, former wunderking Ernests Gulbis upset the tournament's fifth seed, Belgium's Xavier Malisse.

Down a set early, Gulbis rallied to a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) victory over the tournament's fifth seed.
Gulbis notched 13 aces and was successful on 53 percent of his second serves to take the victory.

Nineteen-year-old Ryan Harrison defeated Richard Berankis 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-3, Grigor Dimitrov dismissed Tommy Haas 6-2, 6-3, and Igor Kunitsyn beat Fernando Gonzalez 6-4, 6-3.
