Jelena Jankovic
's befuddling slide from 2010 continued into the New Year Monday, and Francesca Schiavone appears along for the ride.

Both top 10 players suffered first-round upsets at the Medibank International Sydney on Monday, losing in three sets.

Schiavone, the 2010 French Open champion, fell to Russia's Alisa Kleybanova, ranked 25th overall, 6--7(5), 6-1, 6-2. After winning the first-set tie-breaker, Schiavone was broken twice in the second set and three times in the third to start the year with a loss.

France's Aravane Rezai, ranked 19th, spelled doom for Jankovic with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 victory. Despite 11 double faults on the match, Rezai feasted on Jankovic's unforced errors.

Since reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon last summer, Jankovic has gone 7-12, dropping from second to eighth in the rankings.

The rest of Sydney's ranked seeds - No. 7 Victoria Azarenka, No. 8 Na Li and No. 4 Samantha Stosur all advanced.

There was another upset outside the top seeds, however. Qualifier Bojan Jovanovski, ranked 76th in the world, took out 22nd-ranked Kaia Kanepi , 6-4, 6-4.
