Could it really be that Jelena Jankovic just had something in her eye all this time? Having fallen from No. 2 to No. 8 since last year’s showing at Wimbledon, the pride of Serbia enjoyed her first win over a Top 10 player since May 2010 by defeating No. 4 Samantha Stosur, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(4) in Friday’s quartefinals at Dubai.

Jankovic will take on soon-to-be re-instated No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinals.Jankovic was ranked No. 2 in the world after reaching the semifinals of the French Open and the fourth round of Wimbledon last spring and summer.

Her last victories over Top 10 players came at Rome in 2010 when she defeated No. 4 Venus Williams and No. 1 Serena Williams in back-to-back rounds.Since then, she had gone 0-4 against Top10 competitors, including 0-3 in last year’s Tour Championships in which she never won a set. That slump was part of an overall 7-13 slide post-Wimbledon including the first two tournaments of this year.

Jankovic underwent eye surgery in the off-season and opted to sit out Serbia’s Fed Cup playoff earlier this month to further heal.It looks like the extended break has paid off as Jankovic has dispatched of Chanelle Scheepers, 12th-seeded Kaia Kanepi and now Stosur in consecutive matches at Dubai. The other semifinal will pit 16th-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova against 11th-seeded Flavia Pennetta. Kuznetsova continued a strong start to 2011 by defeating eighth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, 7-6(7), 6-3.

After compiling just 26 wins in 2010, Kuznetsova has already racked up 11 through the first seven weeks of 2011.Pennetta crushed 15th-seeded Alisa Kleybanova, 6-2, 6-0. The Italian is off to a red-hot start in 2011, off to an 11-2 start with wins over top five players Vera Zvonareva and Stosur.
