(September 1, 2011) Eleventh-seeded Jelena Jankovic defeated Jelena Dokic 6-3, 6-4 Thursday afternoon to advance to the third round of the US Open.
Although Jankovic committed a somewhat sloppy 23 unforced errors, Dokic suffered in her service games as she hit 15 double faults.
“I think her serve was, you know, very inconsistent. You know, she would give me a lot of free points on that stroke," Jankovic said. "So I really, you know, felt comfortable, you know, on the ground playing my shots. When I was able to dictate, especially when I kind of lift up my level of play up, I would kind of be on a roll and kind of control the whole game.”
Jankovic will play against either Petra Martic or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the next round.
Seventh-seeded Francesca Schiavone handed a solid loss to her Croatian opponent, Mirjana Lucic, 6-1, 6-1. Lucic showed an unfortunate amount of unforced errors – 32 to Schiavone’s 7. Likewise, Schiavone won 94 percent of her first serve points, while Lucic won only 48 percent.
In a show of confidence, Schiavone joked at the press conference about her preference between Roland Garros and the US Open.
“Ay, when I will win, I will tell you the difference and which one I prefer,” Schiavone said.
She goes on to play against either Mona Barthel or Chanelle Scheepers in the third round.
Ana Ivanovic was given a walkover by Petra Cetkovska, who she lost to in the third round of Wimbledon.
“It's never actually nice to win this way ... I really hope she recovers fast. She had a great week last week," Ivanovic said. "I mean, I would be lying if I said I wasn't happy to be through to next round. But, you know, it's important to build from there."
She goes on to play against either Shahar Peer or Sloane Stephens in the next round.
Eighteenth-seeded Italian Roberta Vinci defeated the young Frenchwoman Alize Cornet, 6-2, 6-3. Despite Vinci’s inability to convert the majority of her break points, she was able to use her serve to take the match. Vinci goes on to play against either Andrea Petkovic or Jie Zheng in the next round.
Silvia Soler-Espinosa upset 31st-seeded Kaia Kanepi 6-4, 6-2. Statistically, their games were pretty similar, with the exception being Kanepi’s winning percentage on second serves.
She won 30 percent of her second-serve points, while Soler-Espinosa had more than double that at 65 percent. Soler-Espinosa goes on to play against Carla Suarez-Navarro in the third round.
