King Advances While Bethanie's Paris Trip Ends in Pain

By Erik Gudris

(February 9th, 2012) It was mixed day of results for American women playing on different continents while the top seeds at Open GDF Suez in Paris and the PPT Pattaya Open in Thailand cruised into the quarterfinals.

In Thailand, No. 3 seed and defending champion Daniela Hantuchova eased her way past Poland's Urszula Radwanksa 6-3, 6-2 setting up a quarterfinal meeting with America's Vania King who continued her good early year form with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Russia's Alla Kudrayavtseva. Top seed Vera Zvonareva is set to take on Sorana Cirstea tomorrow.

Despite chilly temps outside, the action heated up indoors at the Open GDF Suez event with No. 1 seed Maria Sharapova easily winning her opening round match against Chanelle Scheepers 6-2, 6-2. But a painful exit awaited last year's semifinalist Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the U.S. as she suffered a lower back injury midway through her match against Italy's Roberta Vinci. Despite playing in obvious pain, Sands attempted a comeback after losing the first set but eventually succumbed in a three set loss 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

In other early round action in Paris, qualifier Mona Barthel upset France's Pauline Parmentier 6-3, 6-0 while Klara Zakopalova took out Tsventana Pironkova 6-0, 6-3.
