(October 17, 2012)—Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, vying for their first appearance at the WTA Championships in Istanbul next week, kept their hopes alive with a 6-3, 1-6, 11-9 victory over Anna Lena Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke on Wednesday in first-round play at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

The American duo is one match away from a showdown with second seeds Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova in the semifinals, but they will have to defeat the third-seeded tandem of Nuria Llagostera Vives and Sania Mirza in the quarterfinals before getting a shot at the Russians.

Kirilenko and Petrova notched a hard-fought 6-1, 3-6, 10-7 victory over Lindsay Lee-Waters and Megan Moulton-Levy today to advance to the semifinals on Wednesday.

The Russian tandem entered the Kremlin Cup with a slim 32-point margin over the Americans.

Kops-Jones and Spears must win their next to matches to qualify for Istanbul.
