(October 18, 2011) Sixth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova soundly defeated French qualifier Alize Cornet, 6-3, 6-3 during the second day of play at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, Russia. The two-time Grand Slam winner rallied from 2-0 in the second set to win five consecutive games and eventually the match.
Tsvetana Pironkova moved on to the second round after Petra Martic retired with a left foot blister after going down in the first set 6-1. She will face a serious challenge in the form of Kuznetsova in the next round.
Russia’s own Ksenia Pervak moves on to the second round with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Kazakhstan’s Galina Voskovoeva. Surprisingly, Voskovoeva got in six aces and Pervak committed twice as many double faults. However, Voskovoeva only saved a third of her break points and won 52-percent of her first serve points. Pervak goes on to play against Marion Bartoli, recent winner of the Japan Open.
Lucie Safarova defeated Spain’s Arantxa Parra Santoja in the only three-set match of the day, 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-3. Parra Santoja was unable to save six of seven break points and put up lower percentages on both first and second serves. This sets up a second round meet up with the Czech and the No. 2 seed Agnieszka Radwanska.
Klara Zakopalova defeated Ukranian qualifier Olga Savchuk 6-3, 6-1. Savchuck only won 48-percent of her first serve points and 22-percent of her second serve points. She goes on to face either Polona Hercog or 8th seed Dominika Cibulkova in the next round.
