(January 6, 2012) In what may have been a preview of one of 2012's main rivalries, Petra Kvitova held of World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki to win 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-4 at the Hopman Cup Friday.
Tomas Berdych followed Kvitova's win up with a 6-1, 6-3 rout of Frederik Nielsen to secure the Czech Republic's spot in the final.
Kvitova led Wozniacki by at least one break of serve in all three sets, only to see the Danish World No. 1 come back to level the score.
The Czech had three set points at 5-4, 40-love on her serve, but a determined Wozniacki battled back to force a tiebreaker. After Kvitova narrowly won that, she raced out to a 3-0 lead in the second set only to lose the next six games.
She broke in the first game of the third set and went up a double break, but Wozniacki made the match a tense affair as she broke back once and forced Kvitova to close out the match on her serve. The World No. 2 eventually did after two hours and 17 minutes.
"It was a great match from both of us and hopefully the people liked it. I’m really happy that I won because it’s a small test on how we are prepared for the Australian Open and Caroline played really well and it was a really close match," Kvitova said.
Kvitova and Wozniacki are separated by little more than 100 points in the rankings, a gap that the Czech can more than make up if she wins in Sydney next week.
Kvitova and Berdych will play Richard Gasquet and Marion Bartoli in the Hopman Cup final.
