(October 29, 2011) Just a day after overcoming a slow start against Agnieszka Radwanska, Petra Kvitova once again saw herself down early against Samantha Stosur. The Australian missed an opportunity to take complete command early in the second set, and that was all the Czech needed to rally to a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win.
Already down a set and facing a break point to trail 0-2 in the second, Kvitova suddenly arrived in a big way, reeling off 11 of 13 games to level the match and then build a 5-0 lead in the deciding set. Stosur pick up her speed of play, staggering Kvitova and bringing the match within one break of serve.
In the end, the lead was too much for the Australian who finally fell in 2 hours 5 minutes. The biggest difference in the match came on Kvitova’s return, which forced Stosur to defend 11 break chances in the match giving up five.
When asked about the match, Kvitova offered plenty of praise for her opponent saying, “Sam was serving very well today, so it was key I was able to break her in the second and third sets. It was getting very tough at the end. I had 5-0 and then she was playing very fast, hitting many winners. It was getting tough to concentrate on my service games. You never know what will happen when you play top players.”
Kvitova is the first player since Maria Sharapova in 2004 to reach the final of the year-end event in her debut.
