For Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, 16 years was worth the wait.

That's how long it's been since since the Croatian won a WTA title. She ended that long break by claiming the Coupe Banque Nationale title over top seed Venus Williams in Quebec City, Canada.

Lucic-Baroni claimed the first set 6-4. But even after she jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set, things were not certain that the match would end on her terms. Williams managed to break back and get back on serve late in the set.

Yet Lucic-Baroni responded with another break of the former No. 1's serve. With that, the 32-year-old Lucic-Baroni kept hold of her momentum to serve out the 6-4, 6-3 victory in 86 minutes.

The title is her first since winning the Croatian Open back in 1998 and is her third career title overall. Lucic-Baroni also ends the longest wait for a player between titles at 16 years and four months.

Williams, who was seeking her 46th career title, earlier won the Dubai event and is now ranked back inside the top 20.

Lucic-Baroni, who left the tour for three years, returned in 2007. She recently reached the US Open quarterfinals after beating Simona Halep. Lucic-Baroni is projected to be ranked just outside the top 50 when the new rankings appear on Monday.
