Mardy Fish Flies Up Rankings to No. 21
Another strong showing gave Mardy Fish the kind of ratings boost the President of the United States can only dream about these days.
Fish, the runner-up to Roger Federer at the Western & Southern Masters in Cincinnati, climbed 15 spots in the ATP Rankings to No. 21. It was the biggest jump by any player inside the Top 100, and has Fish to his highest point since he was ranked 20th in March of 2009.
It's a logjam of American men starting at No. 20 with John Isner, then Fish, then Sam Querrey at No. 22.
American Taylor Dent jumped the second most spots this week, up 13 to No. 70.
Perhaps the most exciting move of the week was that of American Andy Roddick, who strode back into the Top 10 with his semifinal performance, moving up four spots and knocking Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to 11th. If Roddick can continue his recent revitalized play at the US Open, he has a real shot to move even higher, currently trailing No. 8 Fernando Verdasco by 205 points.
Almost making strong moves up were Ricardo Mello (+11 to No. 81) and Dennis Istomin (+7 to No. 46).
The biggest tumble of the week was suffered by Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who dropped eight slots to No. 52. Garcia-Lopez has not played since mid-July.
Dropping six spots apiece were Frenchmen Jeremy Chardy (64th) and Gilles Simon (40th). Simon was defeated by Fish in the first round at Cincinnati last week. It's been a year-long decline for Simon, who was ranked No.9 at this time a year ago, and finished 2009 at No. 15.
Julien Benneatu and Lleyton Hewitt each slid four spots, with Hewitt dropping to No. 34. It's Hewitt's lowest ranking since this time last year.
The women's rankings are in stasis until the conclusion of the Rogers Cup, which is scheduled for today. Watch live score updates of the semifinals (10:30 a.m.) and the final (1:30 p.m.) on TennisNow.com.
