(September 25, 2011) Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez defeated Galina Voskoboeva in a hard fought match, 7-6(0), 7-6(2), to capture the Hansol Korea Open title. This is Martinez Sanchez’s first WTA title on hard court. On her road to victory here, the Spaniard was able to win ever single match in straight sets.
Martinez Sanchez said of the match, “I felt I played well the whole match. I like coming to net and I think it also makes my opponents uncomfortable, so it works well. But Galina played well - this was my toughest match of the week. I had to fight until the end.”
In doubles, Natalie Grandin and Vladimira Uhlirova defeated Vera Dushevina and Galina Voskoboeva, 7-6(5), 6-4 to capture the doubles title.
In other WTA news, the first day of play has begun in Tokyo at the Toray Pan Pacific Open. Notably, Flavia Pennetta in three sets to Kaia Kenepi 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and Anastasija Sevstova retired in her match against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova at 7-6(2), 4-1, citing a right hip injury.
Jelena Jankovic, Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic, Julia Goerges and Marion Bartoli are among the notables taking the court tomorrow.
