(October 16, 2011) Marion Bartoli captured the Osaka title, defeating No. 1 seed Samantha Stosur, 6-3, 6-1 in the final.
This is her latest win in the chase to the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships, with Agnieszka Radwanska and Bartoli fighting for the eight and final spot in the year-end tournament. Even with her win in Osaka, Bartoli must still win Woscow and Radwanska must lose her Moscow opener.
Bartoli said of her play, ""I'm very happy with the way I played this week. I felt my level dropped in August, especially at the US Open, but now I'm playing well again. Obviously to win a title is great. Now I have two this year, so I'm really happy."
With a rain delay pushing the semis and the finals to the same day, Bartoli had to first defeat No. 3 seed Angelique Kerber before moving on to meet Stosur in the finals. She won 6-1, 7-6(5).
She said, "I played against Sam then Petra in the same day to win Eastbourne - maybe I should play two matches in one day every time! They are long days but it's very much mental. We are all very good athletes and practice so much, I don't think it's a matter of fitness or stamina. It's how much you have left mentally."
In doubles, Kimiko Date-Krumm and Shuai Zhang defeated 1st-seeded Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova, 7-5, 3-6, 11-9. This marks their first title together and Zhang's first WTA title of any sort. Date-Krumm had previously won the title in 1996 with her partner Ai Sugiyama.
