(November 4, 2011) Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues advanced to the semifinals of the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions in Bali, Indonesia after her opponent, Marion Bartoli retired in the third set.
Bartoli, who saw two match points slip away at the end of the second set, collapsed on court due to an ankle injury while trailing 4-6, 7-6(7), 1-0.
The Frenchwoman began to show signs of pain when she double faulted away a match point late in the second set.
"It started to hurt a few seconds after and when I got the match point on my serve I really struggled to put any weight on my foot. Everything falls apart from there," Bartoli said to Reuters.
"I didn't put any weight on it while I sat in my chair (before the third set) but when I began to walk to serve I realized how bad it was getting,” she added.
Medina Garrigues had never beaten Bartoli on hard court before and was previously 2-6 head to head, with both wins coming on clay.
The Spaniard will now face Sabine Lisicki of Germany, who shook off a slow start to get by Daniela Hantuchova 7-5, 6-2 in just under two hours.
Hantuchova raced out to a 4-0 lead, but Lisicki countered with a run of her own to level the match at 5-5. After a break of serve, the German was able to serve out the first set and take it 7-5. Lisicki was able to break serve in the first game of the second set and comfortably cruised for a 7-5, 6-2 win.
The two had been on level playing field, with each winning a match in the head to head series. Lisicki won their most previous contest on grass earlier this year in Birmingham in straight sets.
Lisicki has never met Medina-Garrigues in tournament play.
