(May 12, 2010) Venus Williams is moving up and Serena Williams is moving out.
On a day in which Venus Williams battled back for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 third-round victory over 15th-seeded Italian Francesca Schiavone at the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open to secure the second spot in the rankings for the first time since May 11, 2003, Serena Williams was bounced out of Madrid by Nadia Petrova.
Petrova broke the World No. 1 twice in the final set to advance to the Madrid quarterfinals with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory in two hours, 11 minutes.
It was Petrova's third win over Williams in nine meetings. She scored a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(5) victory over Williams in the Beijing quarterfinals last fall.
The 16th-seeded Russian advanced to the quarterfinals where she will play either left hander Lucie Safarova, who beat 11th-seeded Maria Sharapova in the opening round, or Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru, who defeated sixth-seeded Elena Dementieva, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.
