(September 3, 2011) World No. 1 Novak Djokovic cruised into the fourth round of the US Open after he dismantled Nikolay Davydenko of Russia 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 Friday night.
Davydenko was always going to be a dangerous threat for Djokovic. He is a former World No. 3, and he reached the semifinal of the US Open in 2006 and 2007.
He is also a consistent baseliner with plenty of speed to spare, and Djokovic said after the match he had to be on his game.
“This was the first test I had this tournament, and it was expected," he said. “Davydenko is a great player, he's been around many years, and he knows how to play on the big stages in Grand Slams. He has a very aggressive game, that’s why I was missing some balls from the start. But I was able to do better and improve some things in the second and third sets."
Djokovic struggled early, but still earned two breaks of serve for a 4-1 lead. The second set was a tougher test, but the Serb's solid groundstrokes and exceptional mobility were too much for Davydenko. By the beginning of the third set, the Russian looked like a defeated man, and he put up little resistance in the rest of the match.
Today's win was Djokovic's 60th of the season.
The World No. 1 will play 22nd-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov, who beat Ivo Karlovic in four sets earlier Friday, next in what will be their first career meeting.
