Olympic Gold is Not on Federer’s Bucket List

By Chris Oddo

Federer Olympics (July 30, 2012) -- Roger Federer moved one step closer to tennis immortality  -- many will argue that he is already immortal, and I'm not one to argue -- by defeating Julien Benneteau 6-2, 6-2 on Centre Court on Monday.

The World No. 1 and 17-time Grand Slam champion could become the first player in the history of tennis to own all four Grand Slam titles plus Olympic gold in singles and doubles (Serena Williams is also in the running to achieve the feat at the 2012 Games), but he isn’t as concerned about the results as some of us stat-hoarding, GOAT-comparing tennis enthusiasts.

Here’s what the Swiss Maestro had to say in a press conference about his so-called "Bucket List" after his first-round win over Alejandro Falla:

Q.   In the bigger picture, in your bucket list, is the Olympic gold one of the things you have left to do?  You won one, but what other bucket list things do you have?

ROGER FEDERER:
"None really. People think I have to gobble up everything to make my résumé as great-looking as possible. It's not the case. I just play a full schedule from January to November, try to play as well as I can, and enjoy myself really.

"It's true since 2000, when I was part of the Olympics back then, it's been 12 years ago now, that definitely lit the fire for me inside of myself, hopefully doing really well at the Olympics. I did, actually, excellent, 12 years ago, finishing fourth, having chances for the medal, which was completely surprising. I've always had decent Olympics except maybe Athens. But I always learn something in life I think every time I attended the Olympic Games.

"There's no doubt about it, I would love to get a medal here this time in singles and in doubles again."

Not to worry Fed fans, Roger doesn't need to eat, sleep and dream Olympic gold in order to be the best player on the court in both disciplines. Just showing up with a bag full of Wilson racquets and a couple of headbands has always done well for him in the past.
