Radwanska's Shoulder Is a Question Mark for US Open

By Chris Oddo

Radwanska Reutuers (August 22, 2012) -- World No. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska is dealing with shoulder issues just days before the final Grand Slam of the year begins.

The 22-year-old Wimbledon finalist retired from her match with Olga Govortsova while trailing 6-0, 2-1 at the New Haven Open on Tuesday.

"I'm struggling with the shoulder a couple weeks now," Radwanska said. "It's the end of the season and I really played a lot this year."

Radwanska wore kinesio tape on the shoulder during her quarterfinal run in Cincinnati, and saw the trainer during her 6-1, 6-1 loss to Li Na during that loss last week.

With the US Open beginning Monday, Radwanska, who calls the injury "just inflammation," decided to play it safe.

"The Grand Slam is the most important tournament, obviously," she said. "I was just scared to play more."

Vera Zvonareva, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Flavia Pennetta, Kaia Kanepi and Gisela Dulko have already announced their US Open withrdawals on the women's side.

After a first-round loss at the Olympics, Radwanska lost in the quarterfinals of Montreal and Cincinnati, each time to Li Na of China. The 22-year-old moved back into a career-high ranking of No. 2 this week. She is tied for second on the WTA tour with 48 wins.
